Jan 05, 2018
Since the clock struck midnight on January 1 and a new year began, have you taken time to ask yourself, “Am I making life count?” Historically, people make resolutions about changes they want to make in their lives when a new year begins. They evaluate their health, weight, finances, relationships in some cases, and other areas of life that they want to change.
When we talk about making the year count, a quote come to mind that I read recently by Abraham Lincoln. He said, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”
There’s great wisdom in these words by Mr. Lincoln. As you begin 2018, I encourage you to take time to enjoy life and make the most out of it. And I believe the way we do that is by making life count.
James 1:2-4 says, “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”
If you want to make 2018 count, I believe one of the most important things you can realize is this: most often, you can’t control what happens, but you can control your response to what happens. The first decision we need to make if we’re going to make life count in 2018 is to make a choice that whatever happens in your life this year, you’re going to count it all joy. Remember, God is on your side, God is for you, and God is only after giving you good things. If you don’t see God doing something for you, then He’s doing something in you!
No matter what happens in 2018, God is on the throne and He is in control, and He will use every situation to make you better to mold you into the person He’s called you to be on the earth!
Think about this. “A bad attitude is like a flat tire. You can’t go anywhere until you change it!” When I read this quote, I realized that in this new year, you and I may not be able to change some things, but we can change our attitude because we’re in total control of it.
If you’ve made some new resolutions, remember that when you add something to your life, it’s not going to work unless you take something away. So this year, if you try to add a lot of stuff without taking some things away, you’re probably not going to get very far. The real counting is not in just the adding, but also in the subtracting.
I plan to subtract some things from my life so I can add some things. I encourage you to do the same. It’s like the promotional emails that we all get day after day. If we’re going to add things to our lives in 2018, we’ll have to unsubscribe to something just like we unsubscribe to emails that are no longer important to us. We have to change some priorities, let go of negative attitudes and even some things that might be good so we can embrace great things with God.
This year, value every minute of each day, establish your priorities, and make decisions that will carry you toward your goals and priorities. Learn to add and subtract the right things in order to make each day of 2018 count. As you do, you will see amazing changes happen in your life.
The decision is yours and your choices can take you higher and deeper with the Lord than you have ever experienced. Decide today to “Make 2018 Count!”
